So I don’t have time to write everything that I REALLY feel about the following but I am curious as to what others think. This is the mentoring tip I received in an e-newsletter:

Here is another interesting message from my e-mail in-box and the reason why I must go see FOOD INC ASAP!

This is interesting . ..
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavourings….

DO YOU KNOW… the difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end…gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few
only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine..

Very high in Trans fatty acids.
Triple risk of coronary heart disease .
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold….
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.

And here’s the most disturbing fact…. HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but one molecule away from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weenie micro organisms will not a find a home to grow.

Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Email forwards just get better and better!

So this one gets me thinking about urban-black-ghetto-”special”-creative-ethnic-cultural names. Now let me first state, that I do not believe that a person should be discriminated against or judged based on their name. I believe parents can name their kids whatever they’d like but me – myself , I like to keep things SIMPLE!! (in case you haven’t gotten that point on this blog yet)

But in the spirit of uniqueness and in this instance not-so uniqueness (i think I made that word up) here’s today’s best e-mail forward!

Just spotted: a tall white woman with blond hair in midwest – Indianapolis, Indiana no less…. WITH LOCS!! Where are my business cards when I need them and my camera!!!

I guess that this may not be too shocking for some folks but for little ‘ol me with my natural hair salon in Indiana – this is monumental!!! You get your grundge, skater-type, your hippies, but not your average white woman at the University no less with khaki capris, rolling her bookbag WITH locs – DAMN – wish I had a camera. Surfing ebay for one right now. Any recommendations???

Okay so I received an e-mail forward about a month ago with the snapshot above attached.  Okay so what’s up with this??? This is so disturbing on SOOO many levels. What is wrong with folks these days? I don’t even know where to start.  So let’s try this:

• My grandma would say why don’t they dress the babies in baby clothes anymore – nice little gowns with the elastic at the bottom
• Madea woud say – these damn young parents ain’t got no sense these days
• I say – what the hell? our priorities are jacked up?  Folks need to value brains instead of bling
• What do you say????

 So I have not been on the horn here in a minute – but not because there hasn’t been good material transpiring around me all the time!!

Last week I went to a meeting at one of the police headquarters no less and what would come out of the mouth of an older white woman to describe a young black man but the word “colored”.  Seeing how I was the only other colored in the room besides the police commander who did NOT address that aspect of this woman’s comment, I kept my mouth shut. DANG was that hard!!  I could’t believe it! I am in the mid-west, in Indiana no less so I guess on some levels I shouldn’t be shocked at all- but I am still disturbed.  The incident occured one week ago and I am clearly still pissed off about the situation!   *BREATHE*

So I asked some of my close friends, etc. their opinions on the situation and the basic sentiment is that is was ok – because she was an older white woman – she probably calls us worse names in the privacy of her own home. But my response was dang that – I am mad. I can’t believe that in 2008, when Amerikkka is on the verge of its first black president, I have to sit in a meeting and hear someone refer to a black person as colored. 

COLORED – really – like what crayola??? Wikipedia says this about the word:

Colored is a North American euphemism once widely regarded as a polite description of black people (i.e., persons of sub-Saharan African ancestry; members of the “Black race“). It should not be confused with the more recent term people of color, which attempts to describe all “non-white peoples“, not just blacks. The term coloredin particular (along with Negro) has fallen out of popular usage in the United States over the last third of the 20th century, and is now archaic and potentially derogatory, except in certain narrow circumstances such as the name of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

The term “colored” appeared in North America during the colonial era. A “colored” man halted a runaway carriage that was carrying President John Tyler on March 4, 1844. In 1863, the War Department established the “Bureau of Colored Troops.” The first twelve Census counts in the U.S. enumerated “colored” people, who totaled nine million in 1900. The Census counts of 1910–1960 enumerated “negroes.”

Free people of color were sometimes accorded higher status than blacks, because of the association of the latter with enslaved status. In the well-established Creoles of color community in New Orleans and southern Louisiana, many people became educated and owned property, including their own businesses. but were more often considered lesser than people of separate ancestry.^{[citation needed]}

In the slave states, where the world was divided into free and not-free, and especially after the Civil War, “colored” was used by white Americans to refer to all people with African ancestry, in part arising out of southerners’ efforts to reestablish white supremacy after the war and emancipation of slaves. Their efforts included violent insurgency to suppress black voting and try to control the lives of all people of color. Once the conservative Democrats regained control of state legislatures, they passed increasingly restrictive laws, imposed legal segregation in the South, and at the turn of the century, disfranchised most blacks and many poor whites. In this way they gained control of elections and forestalled the kinds of interracial alliances that arose in the 1890s with the Populist movement. One-party rule by white Democrats persisted for more than six decades into the 20th century.

Is anyone out there thinking that given this history, this explanation and this reality we should be hearing this in July 2008?  Do you think it will be worse when Amerikka Barack’s the vote in November?

Someone share some insight – cause I am about to boycott the meeting just because no one else but myself thought the use of the word colored was a problem!!

So I was reading US News and World Report yesterday at the gym- (okay that entire sentence is hilarious as I have rarely done either of these things this ENTIRE year) -and there was some speculation that WHEN Obama becomes president he would have sir hiliary on the short list for chief justice nominees. (if and when he’d get to nominate someone)

What do you think of that? I think I am somewhat indifferent on that one at the moment.
